Journalists Made Protest Against The government's Mistreatment of the Jailed journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur

Mogadishu:- The Somali Journalists in Mogadishu made protest against the Somali government police holding Journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim known as "Koronto" in the prison for 18 days without charges yesterday.

The Journalists are anxious about the police and judiciary mishandling the case of the journalist who was accused of interviewing a rape for woman. 

The Somali government is committed to charge against Abdiaziz amid but they failed to get any case against him, and think that any charges against him will relief the government's image spoiled by the police mishandling against rape victims and reporter. 

The Somali Journalists  are concerned about the government's intolerance of the media freedom and the freedom of expression since the US  authority recently  recognized the Somalia government the first time for more than 21-years

The Journalists  who gathered in Mogadishu, showed their concerns about the government's mistreatment of the jailed  journalist Abdiaziz Abdinur who is in jail for 19- days without charges.

SOMALI JOURNALIST SENT TO THE JAIL WITHOUT CHARGE

Mogadishu- Abdiazis Abdinur Ibrahim, a Somali journalist arrested by the government January 10, 2013 for purportedly interviewing a woman who said that she had been raped by the state security forces.

He was sent to jail without charge as Somali Journalists Associations confirmed yesterday.

It was expected the hearing of the case of the Somali journalist, Abdiasis Abdinur known as “Koronto” to take place yesterday, but the hearing was delayed for the second time to unstipulated date, according to the Somali Attorney General, Dr.  Abdulkadir Mohamed who gave an interview to the press.

“The journalist is accused for the rape story interview posted on Aljazeera English on January 6 in which he allegedly interviewed a woman who said that she has been raped by the Somali security forces, this kind of matter in concern is the integrity of the Somali  police and the credibility of the Somali government,”  said the Somali attorney general .

Attorney general   also said that the journalist will be the prison until his case be brought to the court.

The journalist’s lawyer.  Prof. Mohamed Afrah told media that the case has been

 extremely politicized. 

‘To take an interview a rape victim is not crime and I have enough supporting documents to defend the journalist in court since  I have difficulties to  access my clients at the CID, which questions the nature in which the  case has been handled,” said Prof. Mohamed Afrah.

Somali journalists encountered a lot of risks, as well as killings, intimidation, arrests and they have rights to obtain proper protection in their freedoms of expression and the freedom of the press.

Somali Media Freedom Defender is very discontented about the too many delays of  the court hearing and the involvement of the senior level government  officials to the case which puts suspicion of how fair sufficient justice be  served to the journalist.

SMFD calls for the federal government of Somalia to release the journalist as soon as possible.

Journalist, Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim better known as “Koronto” who is the jail almost two weeks, appeared at the Attorney General office on Tuesday January, 22/01/ 2012, along with the other five prisoners apprehended in connection with the rape case but returned to the CID custody  after questioning by the attorney general along with other lawyers.

 The innocent journalist in the detention is lack of proper charge more than 13-days.

Some Somali journalists have been tracking the rape case and they have been present at the attorney general on Tuesday to follow the case.

 Also the raped woman clearly affirmed her position and told the attorney general that she was raped by uniformed government soldiers even her father and uncle were confirmed the case as well as her husband who is in a one of the detained people publicly voted for that his wife was raped by uniformed government soldiers.

“The UN and AU should investigate this case,” said Media Defenders in Somalia. 

 Media organizations including Somali Media Freedom Defender are worrying journalist’s situation in the jail custody. 

Somali Media Freedom Defender is requesting Somali government to release the journalist as soon as possible.

Somali Media Freedom Defender has cordially welcomed the latest visit to Shabelle Media Network by Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon Saa’id after the killing of Shabelle journalist as key wave and other leaders are required to follow.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Shabelle was as a world class leadership.This means that he shared pain with the Somali journalists who work under dangerous circumstances since the collapse of Somali central government in1991.

One of journalists living in Mogadishu said, "We don't know how many of us (Journalist) are going to be killed after Abdihared, we are very desperate for justice."

Journalist Abdihared Osman  Adan from Shabelle Media was killed in Wadajir district in Mogadishu 18/01/2013. He is the first journalist killed this year.

18 journalists were  killed in Somalia 2012.

"We don't know how many of us (Journalist) are going to be killed after Abdihared, we are very desperate for justice," said one of journalists living in Mogadishu.

It is very misfortune that the killers walked freely, the police didn't make any arrest, since they have journalist Abdiazis in jail for 10-days because of interviewing a rape victim.


Somalia had not had a functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a longtime dictator. Somalia is the deadliest country in the world.

Nairobi, January 18, 2013-A veteran producer for the Shabelle Media Network was gunned down today in Mogadishu, the fifth Shabelle journalist killed in 13 months. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns this murder and calls on Somali authorities to not only investigate, but to follow up on the investigative task force on journalist murders that was promised by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud in November. Unidentified assailants shot Shabelle producer Abdihared Osman Aden at around 7 a.m. today while he was walking to work in the Wadajir district of the capital, according to local journalists and news reports. The journalist, who was shot at least three times, died at a local hospital, the sources said. Shabelle released a statement after the attack, calling Abdihared a veteran TV and radio producer and "outstanding colleague." At least four journalists working for Shabelle Media were killed by unidentified gunmen in 2012, three of them near their homes, according to CPJ research. Twelve journalists were killed in Somalia in 2012, all of them targeted murders, making the country the most dangerous in Africa for journalists, CPJ research shows. In November, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud said he would be setting up a task force to investigate the cases of journalist murders in the country. News reports quoted the president as saying, "The era of impunity must stop immediately." But the president has not yet followed through on his pledge to set up the task force, according to local journalists. "President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoudmust make good on his promise to reverse the terrible record of impunity in Somalia, a process that can begin with the creation of the investigative task force he has outlined," said CPJ East Africa Consultant Tom Rhodes. "We send our deep condolences to Abdihared Osman Aden's family and his colleagues at Shabelle Media Network." Somalia ranks second-worst on CPJ's 2012 Impunity Index, which spotlights countries where journalists are murdered regularly and killers go free. Somali Media Freedom Defender Denounces member of the press murdered in Mogadishu

The Somali Media Freedom Defender   (SMFD) vigorously denounces the murder of Abdihared Osman Adan, one of Radio journalists in Mogadishu.

Mr. Adan, 45, who had been working as a presenter Shabelle Media has been killed around 7:10am local time by three men armed with pistols in Wadajir district in Banadir region.

The journalist murdered by the atrocious criminals few minutes after he has left his home to the Station to put on air morning news according to his Shabelle Media colleagues.

Abdihared is one of the few journalists working in dread conditions in Mogadishu. The Somali Media Freedom Defender (SMFD) calls Somali government to protect the journalists and investigate who habituated to murder journalists by taking all indispensable actions.

Mr. Abdihared left a mother and two kids. Heis the first Somali journalist to be killed in 2013. Eighteen journalists were killed in Somalia last year.

Nairobi, January 11, 2013--Somali authorities should immediately release a freelance journalist who has been in custody in Mogadishu since Thursday for interviewing a woman who claimed she was raped by government soldiers, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

It is very sad that the police ordered the arrest of the  journalist who tired to report case

Somalia is Africa’s deadliest country for the media, more than 18-journalists have been killed in connection with their work past year.
