Somali Media community held a national burial for late journalist Abdilasan Sheikh Hassan(Hiis) and demanded justice for the killing.

It has been a day full of deep sorrow and mourning for the Somali
journalists, who were led to the funeral by some of The National Union
of Somali journalists (NUSOJ) officials and Media group heads,
arranging national burial for the late Abdisalan Sheikh Hassan (Hiis)
who was shot died on Sunday afternoon in Mogadishu, the journalists
called on the government to carry out an immediate investigation to
bring his killer to justice with in 48hours.

The slain journalist Abdisalan Shiekh Hassan(Hiis) was shot dead by a
man with the Somali military uniform at Hamar jajab junction near
Madina Hotel on 18/12/2011.

Somali journalist who showed their sorrow feeling about the tragic
death of their fellow journalist, were all wearing red and white
scarf's on their front heads as well as carrying banners printed on
his photos, saying'' We are asking for justice, security, safety and
the targeting of journalists to be stopped while they were indicating
these words having slain Abisalan's photo on the vehicles that took
the body.

The National burial was organized in collaboration with Somali
journalists and media community and was designated to undertake the
funeral committee. The committee was composed 10 people headed by the
National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ).

The National Union of Somali journalist (NUSOJ) and others members of
Somali Media who had attended the funeral in Mogadishu had declared
that they will mourn for the late journalist Abdislaan with in the 24
hours and in accordingly with the holy Quran no more mourning extended
, the mourning
event had taken place ion Monday morning as planned and finished late
Monday afternoon.

At around 6:30 AM in the local time on Monday morning, The 19/12/2011
the organizing committee led by NUSOJ had taken the body of Late
Abdisalan Shiek Hassan(Xiis) in to the Sheekh suufi graves in the
outskirt of Mogadishu with vehicles while the bodies had been put in
to an ambulance along with some other vehicles from (Habeeb mental
Hospital) where the body had been, the Late journalist was officially
buried at 1:30 noon time in Mogadishu.

The journalists stated that they didn't eat any meal more 24 hours
after they were shocked and frustrated by the tragic death of their
fellow journalist Abdisalan Xiis as the deep feeling inside them could
have been seen on their faces.

After the farewell players, late Absisalan's background had been
talked about and being thanked to his royalty to Somali community
through out his life time, Abdisalan is described as one of the most
activity journalist among the Somali Media who played a great roll of
the donations made for the victims hit by the prolonged drought in
Somalia in recent years.

There had been a numbers of officials who had briefed the mourners of
the funeral including the secretary of NUSOJ, both the director and
the owner of Horn Cable TV station who attended the funeral from
Hargeisa, the Director of Kulmiye Radio station who showed a grief
behave of Kulmiye Radio station, the Somali national women union, as
well as the Director of Habeeb mental Hospital as the officials had
showed sympathy and sent a condolence to the beloved family of late
Abdisalan Sheikh Hassan(Xiis), they insisted the government to make an
investigations regarding the death of Abdisalan.

The secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists
(NUSOJ) Mohamed Ibrahim who took the speech on behalf of the Somali
Media fraternity has sent his condolence to the family and friends of
Abdisalan, the secretary has also backed the unity of Somalia
journalists at large and reiterating that more than 26 journalists had
been killed in Mogadisho less than 5years while no punishment had been
done yet. Mr. Ibrahim asked for the TFG to bring the murderer to the
justice with in 48hours adding that the journalists should stay united
and organize strikes if the TFG fail to get the work done.

The government officials also sent their condolence the all Mass Media
as at large and all to the family and friends of the late journalist,
the officials added that the killer will be found and brought to the
justice.

The Somali Journalist and Mass Media had welcomed the declaration of
the government which indicates the investigations will be carried out
soon.

Late journalist Absisalan Sheikh Hassan was born in 1973, he worked
for varies Media stations, Horn Cable TV stations and Hamar Radio was
the last placed he worked at, Abdisalan had left 4 children, the Media
will not leave back Abdisalan's family.

Somali journalists will not stop their efforts to ask for justice,
untill the killer faces justices

Somalia: Prominent Somali Journalist assassinated in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Dec. 18, 2011  The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) mourns the loss of the Prominent freelance journalist, who was killed in what seemed a targeted assassination in Mogadishu on Sunday afternoon, around 4:00pm local time.  Witnesses  said that a man uniformed in  military camouflage shot at the journalists’ car passing by between Hamarjajab road junction and Hotel Madina around 4:00pm local time. Apparently, that bullet hit the head of journalist  Abdisalan Sheik Hassan better known as “Xiis”, a freelance journalist who worked both HornCable Television and Hamar Radio, Voice of Democracy (VoD). Witnesses also that that the journalists have left the Television station, minutes before the attack, to have tea at a cafeteria in Hamarweyne, a nearby neighborhood  “There were no signs of warning. Nobody stopped us.” Zakariye Abdulkadir Abdullahi, head of human resource office of the HornCable Television said “I only heard one shot and our car turned off the road and hit the wall.”  “Suddenly, I was shocked when I saw my colleague bleeding in the head.” Mr. Zakariye said  Mr. Zakariye said that he immediately sought help in shock and returned to the Television station nearby, where along with some other colleagues rushed the wounded journalist to the Daarul Shifa Hospital in Hodan neighborhood and  after 15 minutes transferred to Madina Hospital, where Late Abdisalam died upon arrival.  On late Sunday afternoon, journalists along with NUSOJ officials carried the body of slain colleague to his home, where he will be taken on Monday for funeral burial.  Late Abdisalan Sheik Hassan (Xiis), 38yrs, will be the third journalist killed in Mogadishu this year alone. He left behind a wife and four children, three baby daughters and a son, among them newly baby daughter born.  It was not immediately clear the reason behind the killing of the journalist,  but many journalists believe that his killing is politically motivated.  The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) called the attack barbaric and targeted attack meant to intimidate and threaten the freedom of the press and called urgent investigation into the death of the journalist. NUSOJ on behalf of the Somali journalists sent sincere condolences to the families, colleagues and friends who will miss Late Abdisalam,   “We condemn the shooting incident that led to the death of the journalist in the strongest terms possible and call for the Transitional Federal Government to investigate the matter urgently.” Abdurashid Abdulle Abikar, NUSOJ treasurer who briefed the journalist at  the hospital said  “I send my sincere condolences to the families and friends of our slain colleague.”  Colleagues who knew late Abdisalam said that he was quit, social, frank and laughing and wished him rest in paradise.  “He was the best journalist I worked with during the the two years he worked in the Radio.”  Abdirahman Yasin, Director of Radio Hamar, Voice of Democracy,  said, “He was frank, social and we really miss him, May Allah give him paradise.”  On August 4, 2011, Farah Hassan Sahal, Logistics Manager and driver of SIMBA radio was killed by sniper believed to have fired by the African Union mission in Somalia, at the radio compound in Mogadishu's Bakara market, while trying along with other media executives, to move the radio equipment into the safer zones of Mogadishu, according to the Director of the SIMBA Radio, Abdullahi Ali Farah.  On Sept. 2, 2011, a Malaysian journalist, Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, 41, a cameraman for the Malaysian National News Agency was shot to death and Aji Saregar Mazlan, A TV3 journalist was wounded after shooting incident took place in KM4 area.  The African Union Mission in Somalia acknowledged the responsibility of the killing.  More Updates, photos and the funeral coverage will follow soon on our website: http://www.nusoj.org.so

Does harassing journalists help the Somaliland's claim of being peaceful and Democratic part of Somalia?



It is always the talk of the Somaliland politicians and authorities that the region is an example of growing democracy and peace in the war torn of horn of Africa nation.

At the international conferences and when receiving diplomats the leaders do not shy away to be proud of what they call as " an independent and peaceful republic, which is on its way of seeking international recognition, despite Violations of Press Freedom and ordeals subjected to the journalists.

It is unfortunate that democracy, the strongest political tool for Somaliland, is not fully practiced.

We can think of democracy as a system of government with four key elements:

A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections.

2. The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life.

3. Protection of the human rights of all citizens.

4. A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.

Have Somaliland Authorities met with all these standards? No Really.

In a democracy, every citizen has certain basic rights that the state cannot take away from them. These rights are guaranteed under international law.

You have the right to have your own beliefs, and to say and write what you think. No one can tell you what you must think, believe, and say or not say.

There is freedom and pluralism in the mass media. You can choose between different sources of news and opinion to read in the newspapers, to hear on the radio, and to watch on television.

It seems that Somaliland authorities think only democratic election through ballots can help claim a democratic republic.

The federation of Somali Journalists: FESOJ, has documented at least dozens of flagrant violations and abuses against journalists in Somaliland, among them beating journalists, arbitrary arrests and threats in the line of their duty.

The most recent freedom case in Somaliland was decumented on Thursday Oct. 27, 2011 by FESOJ office in Mogadishu.

Journalist, Mohamed Abdi Kahin, who works for both a Somali new website Ramaas and Royal Television 24, was seriously beaten by Somaliland police with baston.

The police men who attacked the journalist accused him of taking recently published photographs.

More badly, the journalist was denied access to file a case against his assailants to the Police, something that shows how also the justice system in Somaliland is not even-handed.

"They did what they could and I was denied access to the police station, that is not fair" Mohamed Abdi Kahin told FESOJ, with a very low and sad voice.

Repeated calls and appeals to the Somaliland authorities to stop such unacceptable human rights violation against journalists seem to have fallen into deaf ears.

"We condemn the act to our strongest terms possible and call for Somaliland leaders to stay on the line of real democracy and such unwelcome actions have to end ," said FESOJ chairman, Mohamed OLad Hassan

FESOJ has also asked the Somali journalists and organizations that stand for their rights and advocacy to show solidarity with the Somaliland journalists.

FESOJ has also sent a letter of request asking the United Nations and other Human right Organizations to mount press on Somaliland authorities to respect the freedom of the media.

The grenade attack was thrown into the studios of Radio Galkayo, one
of radios covering local news based in Galkayo town, the capital city
of Mudug region and the explosion smashed the back wall, a window to
the office of the radio director Mr. Hirsi.
“No one was hurt in the grenade attack, but the station's staff was
working in dread condition, but the explosion smashed the back wall, a
window to the office of the radio director,” said local journalists in
Galkayo.
Radio Galkayo was attacked by a grenade that shattered parts of radio
in January, 20110 and this kind of media attack is an apparent threat
in order the media to be silent.
Entire of four grenade attacks against Puntland-based radio stations
happened since 2010 according to CPJ.   Unidentified attackers the
private Horseed FM radio based in in Bossaso port town of Putalnd.
Similarly in August 2010, unknown invaders threw a grenade at radio
Daljir and in May 2010 an unexploded blast was found in frontage of
radio Daljir's main gate.

ministries among them the Ministry of Education in Mogadishu.

Two other journalists were wounded in the attack; among them the
Ministry of education Abdulkadir Mohyadin, a cameraman for Somali
National Television and Ali Hassan, a reporter for Universal
Television, were hit by shrapnel from the blast.  Both journalists had
been sent to cover the unveiling of the examination results.

 All Somali journalists could be the target of violence, while they

with   Hassan Mohamed Ali known as (Antena); broadcast journalist was
shot and perilously injured in the commercial port town of Bossaso,
northeast-Somalia in Puntland.

Hassan Mohamed Ali known as (Antena), a correspondent for the Voice of
Peace Radio in Bossaso, was shot by unknown armed-men at the tea-shop
place near the station of Radio Voice of Peace in Bossaso on Thursday
around 10:20 am, local time, 22 /09/ 2011, where the journalist has
been having a cup of tea, among other local inhabitants as himself has
told Somali Media Freedom Defender on Thursday 13/10/2011.

“Two bullets hit me, one hit my heart and the other hit his right arm,
I was made an operation, I am feeling pain of my heart and my left
shoulder” said Mr. Atena who is in Galkayo hospital in Mudug region
where he is currently medicated  since  the doctors informed him that
he needs further treatment in abroad according to Burhan Ahmed Dahir,
a Somalia journalist who  took Hassan Mohamed  Ali  from Bossasso port
town to Galkayo  and  he also confirmed  me that  businessmen and
journalists contributed  some money for Hassan whose condition is
rather recovering though parts of his body don’t function properly
because of the injuries.

“I kindly request from human rights & media supporters both
internationally and locally to assist me, I got injury badly and the
doctors told me that I can’t be done anything in the country,” sadly
said Mr. Atena.

Mr.  Hassan Mohamed Ali  known as (Atena)  also said  “I am an
innocent journalist whose work is to broadcast  the fact news like
social events, peace and violations against human rights, I don’t know
what I was attacked,  but fortunately I thank my almighty Allah who
saved me from ruthless shooting made by cruel gunmen for me.”


This atrocious attack coincided in two weeks time when another 20-year
old female journalist Huriyo Abdulkadir, working for the radio
Galkacyo, was shot with four bullets by unknown militias on
14/09/2011.


“We unanimously condemned these vicious attacks against journalists
working in Somalia, this is intentionally attack against journalists
thus the authorities of  Puntland semiautonomous state   must crack
down on the deliberately media attacks particularly  the violations on
journalists”,  said  Somali Journalists Association Network (SOJANET)
and Somali Media Freedom Defender (SMFD).

There is no powerful government which can protect the daily violations
