SECOND FEMALE JOURNALIST KILLED IN SOMALIA

Mogadishu: - The Somali Media Freedom Defender (SMFD)) denounces strongly the killing of a Somali female journalist in Mogadishu before last night.

Three gunmen with pistols shot Rahmo Abdulkadir, a female journalist working for Radio station locating at Abudwaq district in Galgadud province of central Somalia.

Ms. Rahmo was shot at least 10- times in Towfiq village at Yaqshid district in north Mogadishu.

“Somali journalists must get protection from the government and it is required to take steps to stop the nonstop and meaningless killing of media workers,” said Somali Media Freedom Defender.

Rahmao was working as producer and technician for Radio Abudwaq.

 

Rahmo Abdulkadir is the third journalist killed in Somalia in 2013 and the second female journalist to be killed in Somalia during last two decades.

Duniyo Muhyadin Nur, a HornAfrik employee, the first female journalist, who had been killed in Afgoye district in-Somalia on June 2005.

Late Rahma Abdulkadir was working as freelance journalist since 2010. She has returned from the central region of Galgadud few weeks ago where she was working recently.
Last year, 2012 was recorded as one of the deadliest years for journalists in Somalia taking the lives of 18 journalists. This is the second female journalist to be killed.

Such incidents have become norm in Mogadishu as journalists have fallen victims.

Somali Journalist killed and two others wounded in Mogadishu Suicide Car bombing

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) saddened to learn the murder of a Somali journalist who was killed in Monday’s suicide car bombing, that killed more than people and the wound of two other journalists on 18 March 2013.
A freelance journalist, Mohamed Ali Nuxurkey, 28 yrs, was killed in the suicide car bombing at the vicinity of National Theatre as he was heading to the Mustaqbal radio, where he Nuxurkey worked. He was also a contributor the VOA Africa Service. Abdirashid Nor Ibrahim who was accompanying late Nuxurkey was also seriously wounded and was hospitalized at a AMISOM hospital in Mogadishu. Both journalists were on the sidewalk, where they were trying to catch a public transport minibus to the radio station they were working for before the explosion and Ilyas Sheik Ahmed who works for Badri Media/EPA was slightly wounded by flying shrapnel at the head inside the village restaurant across from the National Theatre.
Abdirashid and Ilyas were rushed to a hospital, but the body of late Mohamed Ali Nuxurkey was not recognized until he was taken to the Madina hospital, where he was confirmed dead, according to the director of Mustaqbal Radio, Aweys Haji Nor who spoke with NUSOJ. The funeral will take place on Tuesday morning. Late Mohamed Ali was active member of both NUSOJ and SOMESHA.
The Shabab militants claimed the responsibility of the attack, which was targeted a Somali security official.
The National Union of Somali Journalists calls the attack which killed the journalist unacceptable and alarms the journalists to be more careful and sends sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and colleague of Late Moamed Ali Nuxurkey and hopes immediate recovery to those wounded.
“On behalf of the Somali journalists, I send my sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of late Mohamed Ali Nuxurkey.” Mohamed Ibrahim, Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists said, “The Somali journalists should be cautious and take safety measures to ensure their personal safety and remain vigilant, following this horrific attack.”
Late Nuxurkey becomes the second journalist killed in Somalia this year. He leaves behind a wife and two month baby. On January 18, armed gunmen shot to death Abdi Hareed Osman of Radio Shabelle in Wadajir district.
